Matthew 12:38-39

Matthew 12:38-39 (ESV):38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.”

Signs are not meant to produce faith, but to confirm it. At some point, a person must exercise reasonable faith and trust that what they are hearing and seeing is from God. That is when true belief occurs.

The scribes and Pharisees had rejected Jesus. To confirm their rejection, they asked for a sign from heaven. After all they had heard and seen Jesus do, they were still walking in unbelief. Jesus called out their wickedness for asking for more proof that He was the Messiah. He then proceeded to give them the greatest sign ever given: the sign of Jonah, which speaks of the resurrection! Jesus did this to confirm their unbelief, for they later made up a story after hearing that the tomb was empty.

What more must God do in your life to show you that He is everything He said He is? Does He need to show you a sign from heaven? Look around — the signs of who He is are everywhere. Creation itself tells His story. He has already given you enough evidence to trust Him. So stop walking in unbelief and believe already, would you?

Father, forgive our unbelief at times. Help us to walk in faith based on the evidence You have already provided. Thank You for the resurrection of Your Son; it is enough for us. In Jesus’ name, amen.
