Matthew 5:13

Matthew 5:13 (ESV): ““You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.”

Imagine a world without salt—how boring! Salt is essential to everyday life. It functions as an electrolyte, but it also heals and preserves. Jesus calls Christians the salt of the earth because we have an important role in society. So be the salt.

As Jesus continues in the Sermon on the Mount, He teaches that Christians are the salt of the earth. In the ancient world, salt was so valuable that Roman soldiers were sometimes paid with it. It enhanced flavor, promoted healing, and preserved what would otherwise decay. In the same way, Jesus calls believers to preserve the culture around them by sharing the life-changing message of the gospel. When we fail to do this, we become like salt that has lost its flavor.

Are you living as a “salt” Christian? Are you preserving the culture where God has placed you? Are you bringing healing to those who are wounded? We have been entrusted with a message that does all of these things. Our task is simply to share it. So don’t become salt that loses its flavor. Be faithful with the glorious gospel entrusted to you.

Father, we desire to be the salt You have called us to be. Use us as Your agents to proclaim the gospel wherever You place us. Help us never forget our calling. In Jesus’ name, amen.
