Matthew 5:14-16 (ESV): “14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
Christians have been entrusted with both a great privilege and a great responsibility: we are the light of the world. This world is covered in darkness, and it desperately needs the light of Jesus. So shine—boldly and without hesitation.
After calling His disciples the salt of the earth, Jesus declares that they are the light of the world. Some rabbis in Judaism were given this title, but any light they had was only a reflection. True light is found in Christ alone. Jesus is not telling His disciples what they should become—He is declaring who they already are in Him. Their calling was to shine so that a dark world would see and glorify the Father.
Are you in Christ? Then you are the light of the world. You are not called to hide that light, but to put it on display. Live in such a way that Christ is unmistakably seen in you. Let your life provoke questions, stir hearts, and draw the lost toward Him. The goal is clear: that all would glorify the Father.
What an incredible calling we have been given. So shine brightly—and let your Father be magnified through you.
Father, You alone are worthy of every ounce of praise we can give. Our deepest desire is to bring glory to Your name. Empower us to shine boldly so that You would be seen and exalted. We ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.
