Matthew 5:2-3 (ESV): “2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
The greatest realization in life is this: apart from Jesus Christ, we are spiritually bankrupt. No achievement can save us. When we see that we are poor in spirit, that’s where true life begins.
Jesus traveled through Galilee healing the sick and casting out demons, but when the crowds gathered, He addressed their greatest need—the salvation of their souls. They did not realize they were spiritually bankrupt, that no earthly gain could secure eternity. Jesus made their condition the priority, because only those who know they are poor in spirit will cry out to the Lord for salvation.
Have you realized that apart from Jesus you are spiritually bankrupt? The great lie is thinking you have something to offer for your salvation. Jesus says you are poor in spirit—you bring nothing to your redemption. Call on Him, and He will clothe you in His righteousness and give you an eternal home with Him. If you’ve done this then praise God but don’t forget how you were made whole. Amen.
Father, thank You for showing us our true condition apart from Christ. Keep our hearts humble, trusting that You alone redeem. Grant us faith to believe in Jesus’ name, amen.
