Matthew 5:43-45 (ESV): “43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven.”
God loves His enemies, and those who represent Him must do the same. We are not called to love what our enemies do, but to love them as fellow sinners who need to hear and receive the gospel of truth. Never forget—you were once an enemy of God.
Jesus makes a profound statement that directly challenged the cultural teaching of His day: “Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” He makes it clear that this teaching was erroneous. Instead, we are called to love our enemies and have compassion for their condition. Without Christ, they are lost. How will they hear the gospel if we harbor hatred toward them? Jesus tells us to love them, pray for them, and share the hope of Christ whenever we have the opportunity.
Do you have enemies in your life? How are you treating them? Do you pray for them? It’s easy to love those who love you in return, but God’s love is different—it is unconditional. It is not based on how we respond to Him, but on who He is. We are called to reflect that same kind of love. God does not hate His enemies, and neither should we.
Father, we thank You for Your great love toward us, even when we were far from You. Help us to love others in the same way. Fill us with Your Spirit so that we may reflect Your heart. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
