Matthew 6:14-15

Matthew 6:14–15 (ESV): “14 For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15 but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

Forgiveness is a clear evidence of the Spirit of God at work in the life of a believer. Jesus makes it plain that the one who has truly received forgiveness will be marked by a willingness to extend it. To whom much has been given, much will be required (Lk 12:48).

Right after teaching the model prayer, Jesus zeroes in on forgiveness in our horizontal relationships. It’s as if He pulls that one line—“forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors”—and shoves it deeper into our hearts. Why? Because forgiveness is not optional for the believer. God, in His mercy, has forgiven us, and He calls us to reflect that same mercy toward others, for “mercy triumphs over judgment” (Ja 2:13).

Are you holding onto unforgiveness today? If your heart feels unsettled and your fellowship with God feels strained, it’s worth asking if there’s someone you have refused to forgive. This isn’t about losing your salvation, but it will rob you of intimacy and peace with God. The Lord calls us to give what we have received. Ask Him to search your heart, reveal anything hidden, and surrender it at the cross so you can walk in the freedom forgiveness brings.

Father, thank You for the forgiveness we have in Christ. You have shown us great mercy, and we desire to reflect that to others. Guard our hearts from bitterness and unforgiveness. Teach us to freely give what we have freely received. In Jesus’ name, amen.
