Numbers 27:22–23 (ESV): “22 And Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and made him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, 23 and he laid his hands on him and commissioned him as the Lord directed through Moses.”
Every leader needs a successor. The Lord prepares that person to be His man and commissions him when the time is right. For Moses, Joshua was that man.
After the people of Israel were dealt with for bowing before Baal and committing sexual immorality, the Lord called for a census. He was preparing the people for their inheritance in the Promised Land. However, Moses would not be the one to lead them because of his sin in the wilderness of Zin. Thus, the Lord commissioned Joshua to be before the people as His chosen vessel to bring the people into the Land.
Do election years make you nervous? Know this, God has a successor selected already. His selection might surprise us, but it will be no surprise in heaven. The Lord has the plan and He will put the right leader in place to accomplish His will. We have a responsibility to vote but know that the outcome is in God’s hands. He is the giver of authority and He has the right person in mind to accomplish His purposes. So fret not, God is on the job!
Father, we thank You that You are in control. Forgive us for worrying about things You have already taken care of. We surrender to Your will and rest in Your plan, in Jesus' name, we pray, amen.
