Numbers 31:1–2 (ESV): “The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Avenge the people of Israel on the Midianites. Afterward you shall be gathered to your people.”
Vengeance belongs to God. However, He often uses human instruments to accomplish it. Every wicked deed will be revealed and every person judged accordingly. God will not be mocked. Those who stand against Israel can count on this!
The last act of Moses as leader and ambassador of God to Israel was to bring holy vengeance upon the Midianites. Balak, their king, hired Balaam, the prophet, to curse them but God would not allow it. So Balaam counseled Balak to send Midianite women into their camp to commit sexual immorality and idolatry. God was now bringing vengeance upon Balak for this act of evil. The Lord used the army of Israel to wipe out the Midianites as an act of judgment for their past wickedness.
Did you know God is still bringing vengeance upon the evil acts of the enemies of Israel? It's difficult for Westerners to understand because many don't know the history of Israel and its enemies but know that God will use her to judge nations for their past wickedness against God’s people. It should not surprise us when vengeance comes upon the enemies of Israel. God said, “Whoever blesses Israel will be blessed, And whoever curses Israel will be cursed (Num 24:29).” May we be mindful of this truth as a nation.
Father, we thank You that You act on behalf of Your people to bring vengeance upon every evil act. We pray for the enemies of Israel that they would repent and bow low to You. We also pray that our nation won’t turn its back on Israel. May You be revealed through all that is transpiring we pray in Jesus name, amen.
