Proverbs 1:7

Writer: Tim RomeroTim Romero

Proverbs 1:7 (ESV): “7  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

The most foundational truth of the Bible is found in the idea of fearing God. He deserves our reverence and respect. When we submit ourselves to this principle, it will change how we live our lives.

The book of Proverbs is a set of practical instructions from a father to his son about how to live life. Solomon, who was the king of Israel and the wisest man to ever live (aside from Jesus), was writing to instruct his son in practical ways. He begins with a foundational principle—his son must fear God if he desires to walk in the knowledge and wisdom of God. The respect he has for God will become his compass. The less he has, the less direction he will have.

Is the fear of God something you submit to? Do you walk in reverence and hold a high respect for the God who created you? You will lack knowledge and wisdom if you don’t. The fear of God is our true north. It will always keep us pointed in the right direction. We gain more fear of God as we walk with Him and get to know Him. If you lack reverence and respect for God, just spend more time with Him. Amen?

Father, we thank You for who You are. Help us to know You more, that we may revere and respect You as You ought to be feared. Lead us to know You more, we pray, in Jesus’ name, amen.
