Proverbs 18:24

Proverbs 18:24 (ESV):  “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”

The old hymn says, “What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear, What a privilege to carry, Everything to God in prayer.”  It’s true. He will stick closer than anyone else in your life. Praise God for this truth!

Solomon reminds his sons of the frailty of human relationships. People come and go in our lives. Even family relationships can wane and grow dull. But Solomon says our relationship with God is constant—on His end. He will never change. His sons need to be aware of the incredible treasure they have in their relationship with Yahweh, Jehovah God. They can not only know Him, but also trust that He will always be there for them. He is only one prayer away!

Are you lonely? Do you feel like every human being has failed you? Well, you’re in luck—you have a friend in Jesus. He will not only carry you through your troubles but also rejoice with you in your triumphs. It’s unreasonable to put your hope in human relationships, but you can place your total hope in the Lord. He will always be there for you.  What a friend we have in Jesus! Amen?

Father, we thank You for being with us always. We pray that we would not place unrealistic expectations on other people, but that we would learn to lean on You alone. You are enough for us. Thank You for being faithful. In Jesus’ name, amen.
