Psalm 119:36-37

Writer: Tim RomeroTim Romero

Psalm 119:36–37 (ESV): “36  Incline my heart to your testimonies, and not to selfish gain! 37  Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things, and give me life in your ways.”

A divided heart leads to wandering eyes and emptiness. Only God satisfies. His Word shapes and sustains us. Surrender to Him, and your eyes will stay fixed on what matters.

Psalm 119 is the longest Psalm and chapter in the Bible. The author is unknown, though many scholars attribute it to David. The focus of this psalm is the glory of Scripture and the power of God’s Word in our lives. Hiding His Word in our hearts keeps us from sinning and turns our hearts away from evil. It is the Word that redirects our gaze from worthless things to the glory of our King. God’s Word is the “how-to” guide for turning our hearts back to Him.

Where is your treasure? Jesus said that the way we answer this question determines where our heart is. Make God’s Word the treasure of your life, and you will find your heart satisfied in Him. No longer will you desire the things of this world—your desires will shift. As the old hymn says, “the things of earth will grow strangely dim.” It all starts with your heart. Surrender it to God, allow His Word to shape it, and you will live for what truly matters.

Father, we thank You for instructing us on how to live for You. May Your Word shape our hearts to long for and be satisfied in You. Turn our gaze from worthless things to the glory of Your goodness. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
