Psalm 122:6-7

Writer: Tim RomeroTim Romero

Psalm 122:6–7 (ESV): “6  Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! “May they be secure who love you! 7  Peace be within your walls and security within your towers!””

Israel is the greatest symbol of God’s faithfulness to us. We pray for the peace of Israel not because she is superior to other nations, but because she is the only nation under covenant with God. His house was established through this nation, and thus, we pray for her peace.

This is called a Song of Ascent, meaning the ancient Israelites sang it as they ascended to the city of Jerusalem. David penned this Psalm not only as a reminder to Israel of her great covenant relationship with God but also to remind all who would read it that Jerusalem is literally “the house of the Lord.” This nation was established to bring revelation to the world about our Creator and God. The nation of Israel is tangible evidence that God keeps His promises. We pray for her peace because this is where God’s earthly house was established.

What are your thoughts about the nation of Israel? Do you pray for her peace? If so, do you know why? David makes it clear in verse 9: “For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your good.”They are a covenant people through whom God has chosen to reveal Himself. They also serve as a testament that we can trust in the promises of God. If He has not broken His unconditional covenant with Abraham, He will not break His promises to His church. Pray for the peace of this nation, for Israel is God’s chosen nation to reveal Himself to us.

Father, we pray for peace in Israel. This is Your home on earth, and thus, we pray that peace would rest upon this nation. We thank You for making Yourself known to us and to the world through Israel. Guide her and bless her, we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
