Psalm 13:1-2

Psalm 13:1–2 (ESV): “1  How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?  How long will you hide your face from me?  2  How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all the day?  How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?”

God is not afraid of our questions. However, we should never let our questions turn into accusations. Ask all the questions you like—just don’t accuse God of being unfair or unjust.

As David writes the Psalm, he is enduring great hardship and anguish. He asks God how long He will allow this trial to continue. David doesn’t sense God’s presence, nor does he feel the Lord’s comfort. He is vexed and in despair. Yet, as David works through these questions, he arrives at the right place in his heart: God is trustworthy and faithful. David knows that he can rest in the character of his Lord because He has dealt bountifully with him (verses 5–6).

Have you ever put the Lord on trial? Be careful not to accuse Him while asking questions. If you are honest with yourself, you will arrive at the same place David did. God is faithful and ever-present in our lives. He has truly been—and continues to be—so good to us. May your questions lead you to praise Him for who He is and what He has done. Amen?

Father, thank You for enduring our doubts and frustrations. Teach us to walk through our trials with total trust in You. We don’t have to know why, but if it is helpful for us, please reveal what You are doing in the midst of our trials. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
