Psalm 133:1–2 (ESV): “1 Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! 2 It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes!”
Unity is a big deal to God—so much so that Jesus prayed His church would operate in the same oneness as the Godhead (John 17:21). How dishonoring to His name it is when we refuse to be one with one another.
David is the attributed writer of this psalm. He describes God’s heart for His people—that they would be unified. He calls unity “good and pleasant” and goes on to explain the inherent blessings within it. Unity is like the precious anointing oil running down the beard of Aaron or the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion, making the vegetation green and lush. Essentially, those who strive for unity will be blessed in it.
Is oneness with the body of Christ important to you? As children of the Kingdom, we have a responsibility to be one with even those who don’t believe exactly as we do on secondary issues. John Wesley put it this way: “Though we may not think alike, may we not love alike?” Christians often say we should not divide over secondary doctrines, yet the church is incredibly divided over this very thing. Submit to God’s Word and be unified with His body for His glory. Amen?
Father, we thank You for uniting Yourself with us, even though we do not think exactly like You. Save us from pride and help us come under the covering of blessing by choosing unity. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
