Psalm 135:15-18

Writer: Tim RomeroTim Romero

Psalm 135:15–18 (ESV): “15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands. 16 They have mouths, but do not speak; they have eyes, but do not see; 17  they have ears, but do not hear, nor is there any breath in their mouths. 18  Those who make them become like them, so do all who trust in them.”

Idolatry is still alive and well in our world today, and God feels the same about it as He always has. It is an abomination to Him. Guard your heart against worthless idols.

The author of this psalm is unknown, but what is fascinating about it is that every verse either quotes, affirms, or is quoted by another part of Scripture. It is full of reminders of who God is and what He has done to deliver the nation of Israel. It also warns us of the real danger of idolatry. We must never allow anything other than God to take the throne of our hearts. He alone deserves that place. Anything that rivals Him is considered an idol.

Do you examine your heart regularly to make sure God is still on the throne of your life? We can say He is, but our lives tell the true story. If your finances or material possessions occupy your thoughts and consume your time, you may have dethroned the Lord. Don’t trade the infinite God for a lifeless idol fashioned by human hands. Keep God on the throne of your life—He will rule you fairly and justly. Only He deserves that spot. Amen?

Father, we thank You for reminding us of these fundamental truths. Search us and reveal any idols in our hearts. May we renounce them and keep You as Lord. We pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
