Zephaniah 2:3 (ESV): “Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land, who do his just commands; seek righteousness; seek humility; perhaps you may be hidden on the day of the anger of the Lord.”
The world around us does not dictate who we are called to be. We must stand firm in biblical truth and in our convictions, refusing to allow the culture to water us down.
Zephaniah was a minor prophet who lived during the reign of Josiah. Prior to Josiah’s reforms, King Manasseh—one of the most wicked kings of Judah—had led the nation into deep and widespread corruption. Zephaniah likely wrote before Josiah’s reformation, as he describes Judah’s culture as indifferent and morally corrupt. He also exhorts those who are walking with the Lord to remain humble and to seek righteousness, for the days were evil.
Have you looked around lately? It is a difficult environment in which to be a Christian—but hasn’t it always been? Like the faithful remnant in Judah, we must seek the Lord, walk humbly, and pursue righteousness. We cannot allow the world around us to shape us; rather, we must be the influencers of our day by remaining faithful to who God has called us to be. Don’t change with the culture—change the culture by being who God made you to be. Amen?
Father, we thank You for the transforming work of the gospel in our lives. Keep us humble and steadfast as we seek Your face, and use us to impact the culture around us. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen.
