1 Samuel 17:39-40

1 Samuel 17:39–40 (ESV): “Then David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.” So David put them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.”

God has given us the appropriate armor and weaponry to overcome our enemy. “Therefore, take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day (Eph 6:13).”

After David convinced Saul to allow him to fight Goliath, Saul clothed him with his armor.  “He put a helmet of bronze on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail, and David strapped his sword over his armor and he tried in vain to go, for he had not tested them. (1 Sam 17:38-39).”  David knew man’s armor would not work for him.  He needed the armor of God.   He then took his staff, five smooth stones, and his sling. One stone for Goliath and the other four for his brothers.   David was now ready for battle!

As the battle rages on, are you clothed in the armor of man or the armor of God?  We do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places (Eph 6:12).  So make sure you have on the right armor and are carrying the right weaponry for this battle.  Victor is ours in Jesus Christ.  Stand firm in the armament of God!

Father, we thank You for equipping us for the day at hand.  May we never attempt to step on to the battlefield in man’s armor but in Your armor alone, we pray in Jesus' name, amen.
