Ecclesiastes 5:8-9 (ESV): “8 If you see in a province the oppression of the poor and the violation of justice and righteousness, do not be amazed at the matter, for the high official is watched by a higher, and there are yet higher ones over them. 9 But this is gain for a land in every way: a king committed to cultivated fields.”
Trusting in man for provision and justice is like leaning on something guaranteed to collapse. Only the Lord is worthy of our wholehearted trust and dependence.
Solomon acknowledges the depravity of man, especially when it comes to the oppression and corruption of those in authority. Yet even the most powerful leaders are accountable to a higher authority. They are not sovereign. Like everyone else, they must rely on the farmer to yield a crop for food—and the farmer, in turn, depends on God to send the rain and make the crops grow. Ultimately, our hope must be in God alone. He will never fail us.
Who are you depending on today to meet your needs? Is it a company for a paycheck? A government for justice and provision? All of these can fail you—and likely will at some point. But God is always in control. He can even use human failure to place you exactly where He wants you. So trust in Him. Hope in Him. He is faithful and always has your best in mind. Amen?
Father, thank You for being in control. We have no reason to fear, because You go before us. Teach us to trust You more. In Jesus’ name, amen.
