Isaiah 45:1 (ESV): “Thus says the Lord to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed.”
The Lord uses whomever He wishes to accomplish His purpose. He even uses pagan kings to deliver His people from the clutches of the enemy. Oh, how sovereign is our God!
Isaiah pens a prophetic word to the king of Persia 200 years before he appears. Speaking through Isaiah, God calls Cyrus by name and proclaims him anointed—meaning he will be led by the Spirit. God goes on to make specific promises to Cyrus, even though Cyrus does not know Him. He assures him of might and power to conquer, despite their lack of relationship. Through Isaiah (vv. 1–5), God makes many declarations to this pagan ruler. And why? For the sake of Jacob—His chosen people (Isa. 45:4; Ezra 1:1–3). Truly, God uses whomever He pleases to accomplish His plan!
Who is ruling our nation and world—man or God? Satan may have influence, but God is in control. Take comfort in this: the God you serve is totally sovereign—not partially, but completely. Nothing happens without His permission. So rest in Him, Christian. Stop fretting about world events and trust in the One who is working all things according to His purpose. Amen?
Father, thank You for reminding us that You are completely in control of everything. You are at work in every event of our lives. Give us faith to trust You in every moment, knowing that You alone are sovereign. We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
