Mark 3:28-30

Mark 3:28-30 (ESV): “28 “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— 30 for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.””

For centuries mankind has wrestled with the question, “Is my sin forgivable?” The reality is that every sin can be forgiven except one—blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Jesus says that whoever commits this sin “never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin.” So what is it?

That is the very topic Jesus discusses with a group of scribes who were in serious danger of committing this unpardonable sin. These men were claiming that Jesus cast out demons by the power of Satan. Jesus explained that a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. Satan does not cast out Satan. Christ was casting out demons by the power of the Holy Spirit, yet these religious leaders knowingly attributed the Spirit’s work to the devil. They were rejecting the Spirit’s clear testimony concerning Jesus. In its broader application, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the persistent and willful rejection of the Holy Spirit’s witness to Christ and His work of bringing sinners to repentance and faith.

Are you concerned that you may have committed the unpardonable sin? If so, that concern is actually a strong indication that you have not. Those who have hardened themselves against the convicting work of the Holy Spirit are not troubled over whether they have blasphemed Him. It is also impossible for genuine believers to commit this sin because they have already responded to the Spirit’s conviction and come to Christ in faith. The ongoing rejection of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is ultimately a rejection of the Holy Spirit, for it is the Spirit who leads us to Christ. Every other sin can be forgiven through faith in Christ, but those who persist in rejecting Him will die in their sins without forgiveness.

Father, thank You for graciously revealing the seriousness of rejecting Your Spirit’s work. We pray for those who do not know Christ, that they would respond to the conviction of the Holy Spirit and receive Jesus as Lord and Savior. For those who have trusted in Christ, help us to walk confidently in the forgiveness You have provided through Your Son. We ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.
