Mark 5:36-37

Mark 5:36-37: “36 But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not fear, only believe.” 37 And he allowed no one to follow him except Peter and James and John the brother of James.”

Fear will paralyze you. Faith will set you free. The question is: which one will characterize your life?

After Jesus left Gadara, He crossed the Sea of Galilee and returned to Capernaum. Immediately He was approached by Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, whose little daughter was deathly ill. As Jesus made His way to Jairus’s home, a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for twelve years came up behind Him in faith, touched the hem of His garment, and was instantly healed. Jesus perceived that power had gone out from Him and asked, “Who touched My garments?” The woman came forward trembling and confessed what she had done. Jesus lovingly replied, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

At that very moment, messengers arrived from Jairus’s house with heartbreaking news: “Your daughter is dead.” But Jesus overheard what they said and immediately told Jairus, “Do not fear, only believe.” Jesus then went to the house and raised the little girl from the dead.

So let me ask you: Are you walking in fear or in faith? Fear and faith both seek to shape the way we respond to life’s circumstances. Fear focuses on what seems impossible, while faith rests in the God with whom nothing is impossible. The issue is one of perspective. Will you live controlled by fear, or will you trust the Lord even when the odds seem stacked against you? Jesus’ words still speak to us today: “Do not fear, only believe.” Amen?

Father, You are the Way Maker and Miracle Worker. Help us not to be controlled by fear when we face the trials of this life, but to walk by faith, trusting in Your sovereign power and perfect goodness. Strengthen our confidence in You, knowing that nothing is too difficult for You. May our faith be anchored in Your promises and our hope fixed on Christ. We ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.
