Matthew 27:54 (ESV): “When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!””
The death of Jesus Christ confirmed that He was everything He claimed to be. The evidence was clear, at least to one Roman centurion. But the evidence was not only seen in Jesus’ death itself, but also in the results of His death.
After Jesus died on the cross, the veil that separated man from the presence of God was torn in two from top to bottom, signifying that access to God had now been opened through Jesus Christ. There was also a great earthquake that shook the earth so violently that rocks were split. A Roman centurion saw the effects of Jesus’ death on everything around him, and he marveled. He came to the conclusion that everyone in Jerusalem should have come to: “Truly this was the Son of God!”
What evidence have you seen concerning the crucified and risen Savior that has led you to that same conclusion? Was it the access we now have to God through Jesus? Perhaps it was a miracle God performed in your life. Maybe it was the weight of sin that brought you to the cross. Whatever the case, praise God for it! He is faithful to reveal His Son to us as the only way to be made right with God. Stand in awe of the crucified One who paid the price for you. Truly He was, and is, and is to come!
Father, all glory and honor belong to You, O Lord. Thank You for revealing Your Son to us. Let us stand in wonder all the days of our lives. We pray this in Jesus’ name, amen and amen.
