Psalm 39:4–5 (ESV): “4 “O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am! 5 Behold, you have made my days a few handbreadths, and my lifetime is as nothing before you. Surely all mankind stands as a mere breath! Selah”
Life is short. When all is said and done, our days are reduced to a dash on a headstone. What will you do with that dash? The greatest failure in life is to succeed at things that don’t matter. Lord, teach us to number our days.
Many believe David penned this psalm in the final years of his life. Regrets often accompany this stage of life. What he didn’t do, however, was ignore this reality. He asked God to help him understand the end of his days and measure them wisely. In other words, he sought continual reminders so he wouldn’t get distracted. He wanted his life to count for God.
Do you ever think about the brevity of your life? If so, what is your response? Do you run from this reality, or do you embrace it and allow God to use it as motivation to focus on what truly matters? There is so much in this life to distract us. Ask God to help you keep this perspective so you can keep your eyes on the prize. “Only one life, ’twill soon be past; only what’s done for Christ will last.”
Father, we thank You for life and life more abundantly through Your Son. Remind us often of the brevity of life so that we don’t live for the wrong things. This life is Yours; do with it as You will. We pray in Jesus’ name, amen.
